Residentie Palace, a Stay Full of History
Welcome to Residentie Palace – a unique accommodation on the Belgian coast, steeped in history and character. You’re not just staying in a seaside apartment, but in an iconic building that once served as Zeebrugge’s prestigious Palace Hotel.
From Luxury Hotel to Stylish Residence
The impressive building known today as Residentie Palace is a true eye-catcher on Zeebrugge’s seafront promenade. Originally built in 1908, it was designed as a luxurious retreat for wealthy German travelers on their way to America. Everything exuded grandeur — from the corner towers to the elegant entrance hall.
The official opening took place at an unfortunate moment: just two weeks before the outbreak of World War I. During that inauguration, the mayor at the time reportedly said: “And now let them come.” A bitterly prophetic statement, as the hotel was immediately occupied by German troops and lost its original purpose.
After the war, the hotel faced harder times. Recovery never came and the ambitious project proved financially unsustainable. In 1949, it changed ownership and received a new purpose: it was divided into residential apartments, without losing its original charm. Elements such as the ornate facades, historic elevator cages, and turrets were preserved.
Over the years, the building weathered two world wars, economic crises, and the test of time. In 1994, it was officially recognized as a protected monument, a well-deserved recognition for a building that remains both architecturally and historically a gem on the Belgian coast.
Today, Residentie Palace is still a place where elegance and heritage come together — and where you as a guest become part of a unique piece of Zeebrugge history.
